How To Self-Isolate Without Going Crazy!

How To Self-Isolate Without Going Crazy!

Are you stuck at home and practising social distancing, because of the coronavirus? Yes, it’s important to protect yourself from COVID-19 – but instead of covering yourself top-to-toe with sanitiser or buying up toilet paper, consider organising your outdoor gear, preparing for your next trip or having an adventure at home.

We may not have a cure for coronavirus, but we sure have a cure for cabin fever. Here’s how to isolate yourself without going stir-crazy!

Note: If you are sick or have symptoms of COVID-19, seek medical attention. If you want to talk to someone about your symptoms first, call the Coronavirus Health Information Line for advice on 1800 020 080.

Camp in your backyard with the kids

If you feel like cabin fever is setting in, now’s the perfect time to bring out the camping gear. Not only is it a great opportunity to spend quality time with the kids, they’ll feel like they’re going on a mini-adventure (and maybe give you a little break when it’s over).

Break free from the living room and pretend you’re at your favourite camping spot – pack food in a cooler, organise a camp kitchen, break out the stove. It’ll take your mind off the news and the work-from-home, and let you sit back with a tinnie in hand at your ‘favourite camping spot.’

If the kids love it, make it a weekly thing! Create something for the whole family to look forward to, at least until all of the ‘rona business blows over.

Learn and practice knots

While you’re stuck in the backyard with the kids, teach them a bit about knots. Even if you don’t know the difference between a bowline and a clove hitch, it’s time to learn and practice! It’s the sort of skill that’s invaluable when you’re out camping, boating and hiking.

Grab a piece of string or rope, bring up a YouTube tutorial and get everyone to give it a go.

Being able to tie all the different knots is an ability that can fall by the wayside, especially if you don’t do it regularly. Take the time now to perfect them for your next outdoor adventure (whenever that is), and teach the kids something that’ll get them off their video games. By the time iso is over, knot-tying will be second nature to all of you.

Sort out your tackle

For any fisherman, an organised tackle box is as important as the latest fishing rod or reel. Not only does it make your day on the water more productive, it means you can get to the right hook or lure quickly.

At CAOS, we know how easy it is for your tackle to get into a tangle. That’s why we’re reminding you now to take this extra time you have to organise your tackle box. After all, how many lures, weights, hooks and other pieces of fishing equipment do you have stored away?

If you’re stuck on where to begin, break down the storage of lures and hooks into different fish types and label each compartment. That way, when you’re back out on the water, you can quickly identify and access your preferred setup.

Prepare your next outdoor adventure trip

You’ve sorted your tackle, organised your camping gear, perfected your knot-tying, and you’re full of inspiration to tackle the great outdoors. Now what?

While you may not be able to hit the road right now for an all-Aussie adventure, you can plan where your next trip will take you. Grab your maps, start researching online and break out the pen and paper to make an itinerary.

Having something to focus on and prepare for will help you stay motivated and feel like there’s some light at the end of the isolation tunnel.
